About us<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

“Russian World Next Door”<\/strong> is a three year project on the discourses of the Russian political communication and cultural diplomacy in Finland financed by Kone Foundation<\/a> (Finland)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Russian World Next Door<\/em> project examines the complex interrelationships between Russian cultural diplomacy and its perception in Finland amid geopolitical tensions and domestic political dynamics. As part of the research, we are extending our focus to the discourses and practices of non-profit organisations that respond to the socio-cultural needs of the Russian-speaking community in Finland. We are interested in how these colingual organisations navigate a landscape fraught with political labelling pressures while fulfilling their integral role in Finnish society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The study adopts a multidimensional approach to analyse the social, visual and discursive aspects of cultural diplomacy. It first examines the dissemination of cultural and political narratives through digital media in order to understand the broader implications for international communication. The project then shifts its focus to the role of Russian language and culture in Finland. It analyses the perspectives and operational strategies of grassroots organisations involved in this area, focusing on their response to changing community dynamics and their approaches to cultural and linguistic practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using a mixed-methods strategy that includes archival research, media analysis, and interviews with organisational leaders, the project aims to gather diverse insights into the discourse surrounding the Russian language and culture in Finland. This comprehensive methodology ensures an in-depth investigation while respecting the confidentiality of the participants. Finally, we plan to explore the visual narratives associated with Russian cultural diplomacy and political communication in order to understand how  their multimodal expressions are  projected globally.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Vera Zvereva<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Vera Zvereva is a senior lecturer and researcher at the Department of Language and Communication Studies, University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4, Finland<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vera Zvereva is a member of the editorial board of the journal Digital Icons: Studies in Russian, Eurasian and Central European New Media. She has published on media culture and digital Russian studies. Her research interests deal with cultural and political communication on Russian-speaking Internet. She is the author of books Network Talks: Cultural Communication on the Russian Internet  (University of Bergen, 2012) and Real Life on TV Screen (RSUH, 2012), and the co-editor of the collected volumes Memory, Conflict and New Media: Web Wars in Post-Socialist States (with Ellen Rutten and Julie Fedor) (Routledge, 2013) and From Central to Digital: Television in Russia (with Vlad Strukov) (Voronezh, 2014)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who we are<\/h6>\n\n\n\n

Tatiana Romashko<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tatiana Romashko is a doctoral researcher at the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy, University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4, Finland<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since 2010, Tatiana had been a senior lecturer at various universities of St. Petersburg, Russia. In 2017-2018, she was teaching in Master Program of Cultural policy at the University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4. Since 2020 Tatiana has contributed to the teaching process at the University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4, Tampere University and Helsinki University. Her research interests encompass Russian politics, cultural policy studies, cross-border cooperation between Finland and Russia, cultural governance and post-structural discourse theory. For the last eight years, Tatiana Romashko was a grantee of the Herzen University in Russia, Committee of High Education and Science in St. Petersburg, the University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4 and the Kone Foundation (Koneen S\u00e4\u00e4ti\u00f6) in Finland. Her current doctoral research project is devoted to the development of state cultural policy in Putin’s Russia and its contribution to the ‘Russian World’ imaginary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rasa \u017dakevi\u010di\u016bt\u0117<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Rasa \u017dakevi\u010di\u016bt\u0117 is a researcher and lecturer at the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy, University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4, Finland<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a sociologist, Rasa is interested in post-Soviet transition, co-creative decision making, visual communication and data visualization. She has been teaching sociology, social theories, research methods, and project management in various universities. Since 2016 her main research and teaching interests are in visual research methods, data presentation and vizualization, and visual communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
